What is PROSCAR and what is it used for?

PROSCAR is supplied in blister packs containing 28 film-coated tablets.

PROSCAR is a blue-colored, apple-shaped film-coated tablet with MSD 72 on one side and PROSCAR on the other. Each film tablet contains 5 mg finasteride.

PROSCAR contains a drug called finasteride. PROSCAR belongs to a group of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.

PROSCAR is used for the treatment of benign prostatic gland enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). This disease occurs only in men. PROSCAR reduces the enlarged prostate gland in men. Your prostate gland is located under your bladder. Produces the liquid contained in the semen. The enlarged prostate gland can cause a condition called “prostate hyperplasia” (BPH).

What is BPH?

If you have BPH, your prostate gland is enlarged. Urine can exert pressure on the tube through which it exits.

This can cause some problems, for example:

• feeling the need to urinate more often, especially at night
• feeling the need to urinate immediately
• difficulty in starting to urinate
• urine flow is poor when urinating
• When urinating, urine flow stops and starts again
• feeling that you cannot completely empty your bladder.

In some men, BPH can lead to very serious conditions. These,

• Urinary tract infections,
• Sudden loss of urination ability (acute urinary retention),
• The need for surgery.

How to use PROSCAR?

Instructions for proper use and dosage / frequency of administration

• Always use PROSCAR as recommended by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
• The recommended dose for PROSCAR is 5 mg (1 tablet) once a day.
• Your doctor may prescribe PROSCAR together with another medication called doxazosin to help treat BPH.

Special use cases

Kidney / Liver failure

If you use more PROSCAR than you should

If you forgot to use PROSCAR

If you forget to take a tablet, skip the missed dose.

Take the next dose as usual.

Do not take double doses to compensate for forgotten doses.

Possible effects after termination of treatment with PROSCAR

Your disease may improve soon after taking PROSCAR. However, it may take at least six months for full effect. It is important to continue taking PROSCAR as long as your doctor instructs you to take it, even if you do not feel the immediate benefit.

What are the possible side effects?

Like all Drugs, PROSCAR can cause side effects, but not everyone.

The frequency of possible side effects is as follows:

Uncommon (less than 1 in 100 patients but more than 1 in 1000 patients)

Sparse (less than 1 in 1000 patients but more than 1 in 10,000 patients)

Unknown frequency (Unpredictable from available data)

Stop taking PROSCAR if any of the following are in the cellar and notify your doctor IMMEDIATELY or contact the emergency department of your nearest hospital:

• Skin rash
• Itching or lumps under your skin (urticaria)
• Swelling of the face, tongue, throat and lips

These are all very serious side effects.

If you have one of these, you have a serious allergy to PROSCAR. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalization.

All of these very serious side effects are very rare.

Other side effects may include:

Common side effects:

• Your desire to have sexual intercourse may be reduced.

Uncommon side effects:

«You may have difficulty reaching an erection (impotence)

• Breast swelling or tenderness, growth

The incidence of unknown side effects:

• You may experience ejaculation problems, including a reduction in the amount of semen secreted during sex. This decrease is not expected to affect normal sexual function.

• Palpitation (feel your heartbeat)
• Changes in the way your liver works (understandable by blood tests)
• Pain in the testes
• Inability to reach an erection; may continue after stopping treatment
• Male infertility and / or decrease in semen quality. Improvement in semen quality has been reported after drug discontinuation.
• Depression
• Decreased libido, which may persist after discontinuation of treatment
• Ejaculation problems that may persist after cessation of treatment.

These side effects may disappear if you continue to take PROSCAR. If the side effects do not disappear when you continue treatment, they will usually disappear after you stop taking PROSCAR.

If there are changes in your breast tissue, such as growth, lumps, pain, or discharge from the nipple, you should notify your doctor immediately, as these may be symptoms of a serious disease, such as breast cancer.

If any of the side effects becomes serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in these instructions for use, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. It is useful to note the event you are experiencing, when it started and how long it lasts.

What are the other things you need to know about PROSCAR?

PROSCAR (fmasteride) is not licensed for the treatment of prostate cancer. Information from a clinical trial of men receiving finasteride for seven years showed:

* Men receiving finasteride are less likely to develop prostate cancer than men receiving no treatment,

• In some men receiving finasteride, the number of patients with a high score in a tumor grading system is higher than in men receiving no treatment.

* The effect of long-term use of finasteride on such tumors is unknown.

• 5-alpha reductase inhibitors may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer with a high Gleason score.
